Frequently Asked Questions

When is the right time for braces?

We evaluate every child at an early age. It is recommended to have an intial consultation no later than the age of 7. After your child’s evaluation, your orthodontist will explain your child’sindividual growth patterns and the best treatment for them.

Why should teeth be straightened?

Orthodontic treatment will give your child a brighter, more confident smile. Also, poorly arranged teeth can contribute to an increase in cavities, gum problems and wear on teeth due to misalignment can put additional stress on teeth and lead to further problems later on.

Will teeth have to be pulled?

We prefer to use methods that are as non-invasive as possible; however, it really depends on your child’s oral needs and the amount of room available in their mouth.

Do braces hurt?

When teeth are first moved there can be tenderness and discomfort. Patients generally begin to adjust to the discomfort within 1 to 2 days. If not, an over-the-counter pain reliever can be administered to help with the initial tenderness. If pain is acute and persistent, please consult with your orthodontist.

How will braces change my child’s life?

While they will need to be more conscious about some of the things they eat, our goal is to give your child a normal healthy adolescence. Please let your orthodontist know about any activities that your child enjoys that may be of concern while wearing braces or going through treatment (e.g., sports, playing a musical instrument, etc.) and your orthodontist can suggest a treatment plan that is right for you and your active, growing child.
